Newsletter | August 2018     The GRIHA Regional Summit 2018, Bengaluru   The GRIHA Regional Summit 2018, Bengaluru with the theme "Sustainable Alternatives to Urban Fabric" is being held on 4th & 5th October, 2018 and shall serve as a platform for stakeholders to discuss innovations and ideas that can change the way buildings are conceived, constructed and operated. It will be a confluence of individuals from various backgrounds and shall provide an opportunity to promote sustainability, environmental responsibility and exchange of vital knowledge.       GRIHA Three Star Provisional Rating awarded to Madanjeet School of Green Energy Technologies, Pondicherry University, Puducherry   The project has demonstrated 38.65% reduction in energy consumption compared to GRIHA benchmark. Total 132 trees were cut, 62 were protected and 16 were transplanted out of 210 existing trees. 51.34% of building water demand has been reduced by installing low flow plumbing fixtures and 30% of water savings was achieved in landscape water requirement due to the use of efficient landscape methodologies and native plant species. Furthermore, 15 kWp solar PV panels have been installed in the project which meets 54% of interior lighting requirement.       GRIHA Four Star Provisional Rating awarded to New Atmospheric Research Facility at NARL, Gadanki, Andhra Pradesh   Major portion of the habitable areas of building were oriented along North and East façade to maximize thermal comfort. Reduction of 59.87% has been demonstrated in building water use by installing water efficient flush and flow fixtures and reduction of 46.33% has been demonstrated in landscape water demand through use of native shrubs and trees, drip irrigation system and minimizing turf area on site. Rat trap bond walls were constructed using clay blocks ensuring reduced conduction of heat from the building. Window to wall ratio has been maintained at 16%. Additionally, 50 kWp solar PV panels have been installed on site which meets 69.6% of connected load (lighting and HVAC).       GRIHA Four Star Provisional Rating awarded to Western Side Teaching Block, National Institute of Technology - Karnataka, Surathkal   Out of the 15 existing trees, 9 trees were cut and 45 new trees were planted, all of which are native species to the region. Efficient landscape design resulted in reduction of more than 33.6% of landscape water demand and reduction of 50.6% has been demonstrated on building water use by installing water efficient flush and flow fixtures. Window to wall ratio has been maintained at 8%. 52.37% of the habitable spaces are day lit and meet the daylight factors as prescribed by the National Building Code of India. EPI reduction of 60.93% from GRIHA established EPI has been demonstrated by implementing ECBC mandatory clauses compliant lighting, HVAC and electrical power system.       Editor's choice   Nature holds key to nurturing green water treatment facilities The quest to develop greener and more affordable methods to treat wastewater has taken a new, innovative twist.
