Synergy Needed Among Architects, Real Estate Developers, Govt to Deliver Green Buildings: Sanjay Seth
The GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) Rating, which has been adopted as the National Rating System by the Indian government, has been entrusted to measure, verify and evaluate the environmental impact of new and existing buildings.
The GRIHA platforms also enables a streamlined process to collate data pertaining to the built-environment in order to help the government in determining the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and strengthen its implementation efforts further. GRIHA aims to enhance the stock of green buildings in India, thereby supporting the Indian government to mitigate and adapt to the effect of climate change.
‘Affordable housing can be green too’
At the Paris Climate Conference, India pledged to reduce the greenhouse emission (GHE) intensity of its gross domestic product by 33-35% over 2005 levels by 2030. One of the key sectors that need to be factored in to meet this target is the real estate. India’s building stock is expected to double in the next 15 years and buildings are expected to emerge as the largest electricity consuming sector in the country. It is crucial that new buildings in the country are designed to be energy efficient and thermally comfortable.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sanjay Seth,CEO of GRIHA Council, speaks on why buyers and developers are still shying away from building and buying green homes, how to make affordable housing green; and what makes the GRIHA rating tool different from others.

Sustainable Building Materials: Accelerating the journey towards low carbon development
Over the next 20 years, more than half of new buildings expected to be built by 2060 will be constructed. To achieve the ambition of keeping the global warming to 2°C or below, it is necessary to address energy and emissions from buildings. It is imperative to deploy energy-efficient and low-carbon building technologies to meet the growing demand for energy services.
