  Prelude to the 10th GRIHA Summit

GRIHA Council is hosting its flagship event, the '10th GRIHA Summit' from December 11th – 12th, 2018 at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The '10th GRIHA Summit' is being co-created by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia together with the GRIHA Council with the theme "Fostering Partnerships for Sustainable Habitat" and shall serve as a platform to deliberate on interdependence between organizations, systemic sustainability management, and feedback loops for better resource efficiency. Eminent speakers and dignitaries around the world will gather to debate, discuss and deliberate on the aspects of sustainability in the context of inclusiveness, international cooperation and education.


As a prelude to the summit, GRIHA Council shall be organizing the following workshops:

  GRIHA organizes Regional Summit 2018 in Bengaluru to discuss the roadmap for sustainable buildings
 
Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), the national rating system for green buildings in India, organised a two-day Regional Summit in Bengaluru in association with Ela Green Buildings in Bengaluru to pave the way for research and innovations around the built environment. Smt. K. N. Savithri, Chief Architect, Public Works Department, Govt. of Karnataka, graced the event with her presence at HAL Convention Centre, Bengaluru.

Driving on the theme, 'Sustainable Alternatives to Urban Fabric', the summit provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss alternate innovations and ideas that will help in supporting the transformation of built environment into sustainable development. The various panel discussions and plenaries at the Summit identified key research areas that are essential to make habitats affordable and sustainable.
 
 
  GRIHA Five Star Provisional Rating awarded to The British School, New Delhi
 
The project has demonstrated 73% reduction in energy consumption compared to GRIHA benchmark. 5 trees existed on site and all were preserved. In addition, the project planted 292 native trees to enhance microclimate of the area. 65.3% of building water demand has been reduced by installing low flow plumbing fixtures and 56.05% of water savings was achieved in landscape water requirement due to the use of efficient irrigation system. Furthermore, 40 kWp solar PV panels have been installed on site which meets 30% of internal lighting and HVAC load of the project. 92% of ceiling materials used in the project which include are low-energy materials. Kota stone and terrazzo flooring have been used for more than 70% of flooring in the school.

Natural topography of site was not hampered for construction activities; site services were planned according to the natural contours of site. Reduction of 50% has been demonstrated in building water use by installing water efficient flush and flow fixtures and drip and sprinkler irrigation system are used on site to achieve water efficiency in landscaping. External shading with a combination of vertical fins and jaalis has been provided to restrict heat and glare through window openings. Additionally, 35 kWp solar PV panels have been installed on site to offset the conventional energy demand.
 
 
  GRIHA Three Star Provisional Rating awarded to H1-Type Residential Building, IIT Bombay
 
Out of the 40 existing trees, 2 trees were cut and 15 new trees, native to the region, were planted. Highly efficient drip irrigation system resulted in reduction of 68% landscape water demand and reduction of 54% has been demonstrated on building water use by installing water efficient flush and flow fixtures. 49% of the habitable spaces are day lit and meet the daylight factors as prescribed by the National Building Code of India. EPI reduction of 34.3% from GRIHA established EPI has been demonstrated. Furthermore, reduction of 84.68% from GRIHA base case has been achieved in the embodied energy of non-structural system.
