Qatar would make it mandatory for all public buildings and major commercial and residential complexes to adopt green building standards from next month, a senior official of the Ministry of Environment said. In the initial phase, all schools, mosques, hospitals and other public and government buildings will be required to implement the Qatar Building Standards of 2010 along with the QSAS (Qatar Sustainable Assessment System).QSAS is a green building rating and assessment system developed by the Barwa and Qatari Diar Research Institute. The rule also applies to all commercial buildings and towers with a built up area of more than 10,000 square metres and residential compounds with a built-up area of more than 20,000 square metres. The new specifications focus on saving and management of energy and water consumption, usage of renewal energy, reusing wastewater and reducing remnants
