The recently concluded COP26 has given us ambitious targets such as renewables, electric vehicles, use of alternative fuels such as methanol and hydrogen etc. in near future. This is largely because sustainable fuel alternatives help in reducing the demand for fossil-derived fuels which in turn would help in improving air quality and climate conditions. This transition requires an in-depth understanding of available alternatives.

With the surge in demand for e-vehicles, rise in cases of EV battery related failures such as fire outbreaks are common. Similarly, harnessing hydrogen or methanol fuels also involve risks of explosion and caution impedes advancements. Solid state batteries provide promising results so far and could be the “next big” technology transition.

However, there is a need for deliberation amongst experts to learn about feasibility and applicability of these alternatives and dwell on possible clean energy pathways for India’s transport sector.
