GRIHA Summit 2023 champions the cause of 'Empowering Sustainable and Resilient Communities’
The annual 15th GRIHA Summit organized by GRIHA Council was successfully concluded at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, on November 23-24, 2023, with a focus on the theme "Empowering Sustainable and Resilient Communities”. Aligned with the theme, the Summit witnessed deliberations on various aspects of sustainable development and role of empowered communities in sustainability.

The Curtain Raiser event unfolded on 22nd November 2023 at Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. This event showcased the steadfast commitment of GRIHA Council towards fostering sustainable habitats and empowering communities. The proceedings commenced with a gracious welcome address by Mr. Sanjay Seth, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of GRIHA Council, and Senior Director at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Following this, Dr. Vibha Dhawan, President, GRIHA Council and Director General, TERI, offered insightful opening remarks, setting the tone for the event. The Curtain Raiser was honored to host Prof. Sunaina Singh, Former Vice Chancellor, Nalanda University, as the distinguished keynote speaker. Prof. Singh eloquently emphasized the positive implications embedded in the concept of "empowering" and commended GRIHA Council for its tireless endeavors in achieving sustainable habitats. She particularly lauded efforts of GRIHA Council in complementing the national drive towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by India in 2070.
The event further witnessed enlightening special addresses from esteemed personalities, including Mr. Greg Kats, Founder and CEO, Smart Surfaces Coalition, Ms. Dipa Bagai, Director, NRDC India Private Limited, and Mr. Sameer Pandey, I.R.S., Joint Commissioner [Admin], Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), Ministry of Education, Government of India. These addresses highlighted the pivotal role played by GRIHA Council as an agent of change in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly living. A noteworthy moment during the event was the launch of the 10th edition of GRIHA Council’s annual magazine, "Shashwat – Let Nature Be." Additionally, recognition was accorded to all 5-star rated projects across various GRIHA rating variants, as well as the two NVS schools that received the coveted 5-star rating.
The event concluded on a note of gratitude with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Shabnam Bassi, Deputy CEO & Secretary-cum-Treasurer of GRIHA Council and Director at TERI.

The summit was inaugurated with ribbon-cutting ceremony of the GRIHA exhibition- VIKALP by Shri. Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. The intent of the exhibit VIKALP was to equip users to take an informed decision while selecting various materials and technologies while constructing a green building.
Prof. Ar. Abhay Vinayak Purohit, President, Council of Architecture (COA) delivered the special address. The inaugural address was delivered by Shri. Pramod Kumar Tiwari. In his inaugural address, he underscored that sustainability is a pivotal component alongside safety and performance in the standards set by BIS. A significant moment during the session was the release of the GRIHA Coffee Table Booklet titled ‘Beyond Green Building Blocks, GRIHA Impactful 50’, presenting 50 iconic GRIHA-rated Case Studies. Furthermore, the session witnessed the launch of GRIHA Rating for Interior Spaces Version 1.0 (GRIHA InS) by our esteemed dignitaries. All 4-star rated projects of the current year across various GRIHA rating variants were honored with their rating plaques, accompanied by the presentation of the GRIHA Awards of Recognition.

The Valedictory Session of the 15th GRIHA Summit was honored by the presence of Smt. Leena Nandan, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, India and distinguished guests- H. E. Mr. Freddy Svane, Ambassador of the Royal Danish Embassy, New Delhi, India, and Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), both of whom delivered special addresses. Dr. Vibha Dhawan, in her opening address set the tone for the session, creating an atmosphere of reflection and appreciation for the insights gained during the summit.
The Valedictory address was delivered by Smt. Leena Nandan, wherein she shared valuable perspectives on the initiatives and progress in the realm of sustainable development. Following this, H. E. Mr. Freddy Svane and Dr. Ajay Mathur addressed the august gathering with their special addresses.
Recognition and accolades were bestowed upon all the 3-star and 2-star rated projects of the current year across diverse GRIHA rating variants, along with the presentation of GRIHA exemplary awards. Each project was honored with its well-deserved rating plaque.
In a fitting conclusion to the 15th GRIHA Summit, Mr. Sanjay Seth extended his vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants, contributors, and partners who played a pivotal role in the success of this significant event.

GRIHA Council, in its commitment to fostering collaborations, formalized three significant partnerships during the event. The agreements were inked with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and NRDC India, Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).

The overarching theme of the summit was meticulously crafted to pave the way for a better future, one that prioritizes the empowerment of communities in building resilience and sustainability to combat the adverse impacts of accelerated climate change. The summit aimed to underscore the intrinsic interdependence of all forms of life, emphasizing the crucial role communities play in sustaining life on our beloved Mother Earth.
The two-day Summit encompassed a series of sessions addressing key themes, including restoring harmony in critical geodiversity zones, understanding the impact on micro-level regions, implementing interventions for disaster resilience, exploring the role of influencers in raising awareness, leveraging local economies for self-sustaining models, embracing circularity, drawing insights from indigenous concepts and practices, assessing India's preparedness for climate change, integrating sustainability into education, promoting inclusivity, and encouraging the acceptance of sustainable market products, along with advocating for less consumptive practices in the fashion industry, among other topics. Recognizing that communities possess the strength to drive sustainable and resilient development, these tracks aimed at charting a course toward outcomes that shape both our present and the destiny of future generations. Each session witnessed compelling presentations, captivating discussions by eminent speakers and stimulating conversation-stirring interactions between the delegates and speakers.
The deliberate inclusion of a diverse array of topics from different industries exemplified the summit's commitment to breaking sectoral silos and fostering cross-sectoral partnerships. It is through these collaborative efforts that we can truly strengthen and empower our communities.
