Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council, recognized as the ‘National Rating System for Green Buildings in India’, was developed by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in support with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India to promote and administer the development of sustainable buildings and habitats in India. The Government of India has also recognized ‘GRIHA’ as a tool to evaluate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction from habitats under its obligations to mitigate climate change as contained in the NDCs documentation submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India. GRIHA Council issues ‘GRIHA Rating Certification’ for new buildings as well as existing buildings, large campuses, small scale projects, city level developments, etc. under different rating variants and carries out all activities related to the issuance of ‘GRIHA Certification’. Any typology of building project like offices, retail spaces, institutional buildings, hotels, hospital buildings, healthcare facilities, residences, multi-family highrise buildings and campuses with habitable spaces can be rated under GRIHA or its relevant variants. Apart from Ratings and Certifications, GRIHA also works extensively on capacity building and outreach activities to sensitize and spread awareness on green buildings in the country.
