The GRIHA Event 2021

image-here

The warming of the planet is expected to have far-reaching, long-lasting and even disastrous environmental consequences. Longer droughts, increased intensities of rainfall, frequent flooding and bushfires are just a few outcomes of climate change that have manifested in recent years. The urgency of this crisis was emphasised by the recent report "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis" by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which reiterates that human activity is the cause of climate change and we need to take immediate steps to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The primary requisite now is to ensure preparedness and action for the sustenance of our planet through carbon negative interventions.

The year 2019 also introduced the world to the COVID-19 pandemic which brought both health and environmental concerns to the forefront. It also resulted in an onslaught of the global economy. To combat the same, countries began developing and implementing a range of expansionary fiscal and monetary measures. In line with the impacts of climate changes, some concerns have become pertinent to this process of economic recovery, the primary being how the economic stimulus can be made "green".

A green economy is one where income growth and employment is driven by both public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions, enhance resource efficiency and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The overall aim of transitioning to a green economy would be ensuring economic reforms that are green, fair and inclusive. Efforts must be directed toward leveraging technology to build back healthier and better.

Green recovery, environmental resilience and sustainability at large are at the forefront of national discourse and to deliberate on that same, on 10th December 2021, GRIHA Council is hosting "The GRIHA Event". The theme for the event is "Restoring Green Economy" with the aim that it will generate a dialogue about taking decisive steps to go beyond the conventional GDP and measure it inclusive of environmental consequences.

Note: This is an invite only event.

Hands On Workshop on Sustainable Construction Practices

GRIHA Council is organizing a One-Day ‘Hands-On Workshop on Sustainable Construction Practices’ at the LBC, Thiruvananthapuram, on Thursday, 19 February 2026. The programme is being held as a prelude to the 10th GRIHA Regional Conclave, scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram on 20th February 2026.

The Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies is a nationally and internationally recognised institution dedicated to promoting cost-effective, climate-responsive, and resourceefficient construction practices inspired by the philosophy of the late architect LaurieBaker. The Centre functions as a living laboratory for sustainable habitat practices, demonstrating the use of local materials, traditional knowledge systems, and low-energy construction techniques suited for tropical climates.

The one-day workshop aims to provide participants with hands-on exposure to alternative building technologies that emphasise material efficiency, reduced embodied energy, and affordability. The programme will include live demonstrations and participant engagement in the construction of bamboo wattle and daub walls, fabrication of bamboo beams, and preparation of bamboo slabs with mud screeding. These techniques showcase the potential of renewable materials and vernacular methods in achieving environmentally responsible and context-sensitive built forms.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity for professionals, practitioners, and students to engage directly with sustainable construction practices, while also serving as a platform for interaction and knowledge exchange among stakeholders committed to advancing climate-responsive and low-impact development in line with the objectives of GRIHA Council.

The built environment, which accounts for a significant share of global emissions and resource consumption, plays an instrumental role in either exacerbating the climate crisis or mitigating impacts and enabling adaptation. Cities and built infrastructure areand will continue to be exposed to higher climate stresses and frequent climate shocks, thereby disrupting lives, damaging property and harming the natural environment. Therefore, it is imperative to build climate-resilient infrastructure and adaptive cities that continue to protect, provide, and thrive sustainably in harmony with nature.

Nations around the world are united by a shared goal of building a sustainable and climate-resilient future. While each country faces distinct challenges owing to its development stage and resource availability, collective action remains fundamental. In this global transition, India emerges as a catalyst driving scalable, inclusive solutions, advancing clean energy transitions, and shaping policies that strive to prioritize both environmental stewardship and equitable growth.

Now is the time to embark on transformative efforts and revolutionise our design processes, construction practices, and operation and management of built spaces. As the urgency for climate action intensifies, traditional approaches, while foundational, are not sufficient considering the pace and complexities of the challenges ahead. Innovation must be the driving force in shaping a resilient future across sectors and scales. It must steer the next phase of global, national and regional efforts, making climate action inclusive, resilient and sustainable. Innovation propels the development of novel technologies and approaches; however, it alone is not sufficient. It must be coupled with resilience- the ability to respond, adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of shocks. Together, innovation and resilience form the bedrock for building a sustainable future.

In our drive towards creating inclusive and climate-resilient infrastructure, GRIHA Council is hosting its annual 17th GRIHA Summit centred around the theme “Innovate to Act for a Climate Resilient World”, which is scheduled for 3rd – 4th November 2025 at the India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, India.

Advancing the idea to augment the development of sustainable habitats and resilient communities at the regional levels in the country, GRIHA Council will be hosting GRIHA Regional Conclaves in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kochi and Ahmedabad in this fiscal year around the common theme “Innovate to Act for a Climate Resilient World”.

Both Summit and regional conclaves intend to serve as a platform to deliberate innovative and actionable strategies that can transform our climate ambitions into tangible outcomes. We invite all stakeholders- innovators, policymakers, industry leaders, architects, engineers, product manufacturers, researchers, and urban practitioners to convene for two days to ‘discuss, innovate, adapt’ and ‘collaborate & act’ on strategies that have the potential to build a climate-resilient world.

GRIHA Green Building Tour in Bengaluru

GRIHA Council is organizing a Green Building Tour of ABB India Ltd.’s Nelamangala Campus in Bengaluru—a GRIHA Water Positive certified campus—on Thursday, 19 June 2025. The tour will be held as a prelude to the GRIHA Regional Conclave, scheduled for Friday, 20 June 2025, in Raddison Blu Atria, Bengaluru.

The Nelamangala campus is one of ABB India’s flagship facilities, employing nearly 1,500 people and features a cutting-edge robotics centre spread across 3,600 square meters. It delivers advanced robotic applications and digital solutions tailored to the needs of Indian industries. The site also hosts one of Bengaluru’s first smart factories, dedicated to manufacturing ABB’s full range of smart power products.

A standout achievement of the Nelamangala unit is its recognition as the first project to obtain the ‘GRIHA Water Positive Certification’ by GRIHA Council. The Water Positivity Index of the Nelamangala plant stands at 1.25, indicating that the facility replenishes significantly more water than it consumes, while also reducing reliance on groundwater by utilizing secondary sources like rainwater and treated wastewater.

A key highlight of the tour will be the adoption of innovative 6R approach to water sustainability, going beyond traditional water conservation —focusing on rainwater harvesting and recharge; reduction in freshwater usage; recycling of water; real-time monitoring of water consumption and recharge; reuse of treated wastewater; and responsible landscaping practices.

The tour will also serve as a valuable networking platform, bringing together stakeholders from the building industry to engage with experts, exchange ideas, and explore the future of water sustainability.
