Opting for eco-housing may soon prove rewarding. In Maharashtra, those going for green buildings will get incentives in the form of lower property tax. The state government also plans to extend the tax benefit for existing buildings. A timeline for retro-fitting will be provided. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's eco-housing plan goes a step ahead and makes its mandatory for the builder to preserve the top soil removed during excavation and use it for tree plantation, protect the bio-diversity of the area and decentralize organic waste management. For redevelopment projects, a recycling and reuse plan for 70% of the debris is mandatory.
