The civic body, along with TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), launched the Eco City cell on February 24 2015. NMMC has partnered with TERI for attaining the status of first Eco City in the country. The cell will be taking inputs from residents for the various infra and other projects coming up in the city for a more environment-friendly life, besides advising on green buildings.

"The per capita greenhouse gas emissions on account of consumption of electricity and fuel emissions are higher than the national average. It is crucial that efforts are taken to bring down this figure," said Anjali Parasnis, director, TERI.

There was also a seminar-cum-workshop to brief the architects, builders and developers on the importance and means to incorporate sustainable development in their building plans.

The workshop on design and policy dialogue on green buildings - an initiative of civic commissioner D T Waghmare - will culminate in the framing of bylaws and also the incentive mechanism to promote the use of renewable energy and reducing the carbon footprint.
