The brick red government houses in Chandigarh are set to go green as, from the government houses designed by architect couple Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, the city is set for a major shift to green housing. The plan for new-look, environment-friendly housing is ready and all new housing projects will be based on this concept, if approved.

An urban planning department official, not willing to be named, shared that energy efficiency features have already been introduced in the recent government office blocks such as the environment department's office in Sector 19, but had not been extended to housing so far.
