It's won accolades for being among the top institutes for technology studies in the country. But on Tuesday, the Palaj campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn), bagged the honour of being the greenest campus in India. The campus, built over 400 acres land, has been given a five star rating by The Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment for Large Developments (GRIHA LD), read an official statement shared by the institute on January 19 2016.

GRIHA LD is India's National Rating System for green buildings, developed jointly by GRIHA Council and TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), to rate environmental performances of large scale developments like educational campuses, townships to mention a few. The rating system judges the overall impact of the development on its surrounding environment and IITGn has received an overall impact score of 25.9 per cent. With this, IITGn's Palaj campus achieves the distinction of being the first campus in India to be rated a 5 Star, the highest GRIHA LD rating, at a masterplan level.
