Bangalore, which is India's third-most populous city, has witnessed rapid urbanization over the past few decades. Urbanization has brought with it immense pressure on limited resources such as land, energy, and water. For managing the future growth of Bangalore, and the wellbeing of its residents, it is very important to make efficient use of these limited resources. This approach finds synergies with the green building philosophy, aims to 'use less, produce less waste and provide a better environment to the occupants'. In addition, the regulatory policies have also promoted the cause of energy efficient buildings. The Government of Karnataka is one of the seven state governments in India which has made the Energy Conservation Building Code mandatory within the state. Similarly, there is also a mandate from the central government that all the new government buildings should be GRIHA rated. LEED and GRIHA are the two major green building rating systems in India. The climatic conditions in Bangalore also provide the right ingredients for promoting a wider use of green buildings.
