Most old buildings can be converted to 'smart' buildings, saving energy. At present, there are no official retrofitting norms or ratings for existing buildings. There are ratings for new buildings called GRIHA, developed by TERI and the ministry of new and renewable energy. GRIHA- and IGBC-rated projects are eligible for quicker environmental clearances and higher depreciation allowance.
