Green buildings have captured the imagination of people, but understanding the linkages between biodiversity and economy would help us move towards a green state. Green building, also termed as sustainable building, refers to a building created by using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout its life cycle. This requires close cooperation of various stakeholders involved in the creation of a green building comprising of the design team, the architects, the engineers and the client, at all stages of a project. In India, there are mainly two rating systems for green buildings, namely GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), and LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). GRIHA has been conceived by TERI and developed jointly with MNRE, Government of India. GRIHA a more attractive option to governmental, quasigovernmental and private corporations with a predominantly Indian customer base.
