3 Day Training Program

Green buildings and associated energy systems have evolved significantly in the last few decades. Performance prediction of both high efficiency HVAC systems as well as low-energy buildings require complex modelling using energy simulation software. GRIHA Council and Team Catalyst announce a 2.5 day workshop designed to train building professionals in modelling advanced energy systems with hands on training using the DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus dynamic simulation suite of software. When used in tandem, these softwares offer the potential to analyse energy systems in great depth.

The focus of the workshop will be to train building professionals/building energy consultants in using DesignBuilder /EnergyPlus for simulating advanced energy systems and natural ventilation.

Topics to be covered in the training programme:

  1. Modelling for thermal comfort in non-AC spaces (NBC 2005 as well as Adaptive)
  2. CFD analysis for non-AC spaces
  3. Modelling advanced HVAC systems like All variable chiller plants
  4. Modelling radiant cooling/heating systems
  5. Modelling geothermal energy systems

Target Audience:
This is an advanced training programme on building energy simulations. The target audience is energy consultants/green building professionals with some previous experience of building energy simulation.

Fees: Rs. 20,000 plus taxes as applicable

Prerequisites:
This is a training programme on advanced simulations. The participants must have experience of energy modelling. Basic energy modelling will not be covered in the workshop. Knowledge of any/all of the following subjects is an advantage: building physics, building energy efficiency, HVAC systems, CFD, basic knowledge of CAD, experience with any simulation tools.

IMPORTANT:
The venue does not provide computers; therefore ALL participants MUST have their own laptop computers with administrator/installation rights. DesignBuilder is built for the Microsoft OS, for Windows 7 or above Participants may pre-install the free, 30-day, fully functional evaluation licence for DesignBuilder, available from www.designbuilder.co.uk ; navigate to Downloads 'Software' Release Software (Free registration is required by the DesignBuilder website). The DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus software programs are demanding on graphics and system resources. Computers should have minimum 4GB RAM, and at least 25GB free space. Please bring a mouse, DesignBuilder has a CAD like interface!

About the Faculty:
PC Thomas has a long history with building energy simulation. He worked with TERI in the 1980's, as a researcher with Solarch at the University of New South Wales in 1990's,also worked with Arup (Sydney, Australia) in the early 2000's. He now runs 'Team Catalyst' in Sydney, which specializes in achieving measured energy efficiency outcomes in buildings.

About GRIHA Council:
GRIHA Council is a not-for-profit society with a mandate to promote development of buildings and habitats in India through GRIHA family of ratings. It was founded by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi) with support from MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India) along with a handful of experts in the sustainability of built environment from across the country. In addition to implementation of the GRIHA rating system, the GRIHA Council also works closely with other stakeholders on policy advocacy, capacity building and awareness creation on issues surrounding sustainable habitats in India. In India's INDC document submitted to UNFCC in October 2015, GRIHA rating system has been highlighted as India's own system developed for rating green buildings.

About Team Catalyst:
Team Catalyst is a uniquely skilled company, offering a combination of practical experience, technical expertise, training and research skills. The firm's core expertise is in helping buildings reduce greenhouse emissions by improving energy efficiency and comfort. To this end they use practical knowledge, building energy simulation skills and expertise in green building rating systems to achieve predicted and measured outcomes - for new building projects and existing building refurbishment projects. PC Thomas, Director, has more than 20 years of experience in the application and teaching of energy simulation. PC has conducted workshops in the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, South Korea and India.
