One-day GRIHA Awareness Programme for Architecture Students
A one-day GRIHA awareness programme was conducted by GRIHA Council as part of the 'Workshop and Talk Series' hosted by NASA Zone 1 - Sanskar College of Architecture, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The first half of the activity consisted of a presentation which focused on sustainability as it pertains to architecture and the built environment and introduced students to the rudiments of the GRIHA rating system.
Post lunch, students were taught to estimate day-lit areas on a building floorplate based on fenestration design, according to thumb rules stipulated by the Energy Conservation Building Code. This was followed by instruction on the design of effective shading based on the SP 41 Handbook of Functional Requirements of Buildings. Hands-on exercises were conducted to ensure that participants would subsequently be able to incorporate these design aspects in their academic work. The students were also introduced to the basics of measuring illuminance, decibel levels, carbon dioxide / carbon monoxide levels, temperature and relative humidity to further their awareness of the role these factors play in intelligent building design.
Over 60 students from various colleges in Zone 1 of NASA participated in the workshop and the event concluded on a positive note with much enthusiasm displayed by the participants in furthering their knowledge of green buildings and involvement with GRIHA.
