In Philippines, the government made a pitch to strengthen the structural integrity of all buildings in the wake of strong earthquakes that jolted neighboring countries recently. The Environment Secretary said that the Building Code must address public concerns on the impacts of geological hazards on residential houses and buildings. The Philippine Green Building Council said the 39-year-old law was deemed archaic due to lack of environmental and sustainability considerations, among others. In other countries including the United States, building regulations are reviewed periodically to accommodate changing consumer patterns, industry experiences, and development in technology and materials.
